Steel Pipes and Tubes, You Have to Know

Fiberglass, PVC, or high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe is used in certain instances for low-pressure gas gathering pipelines. Seamless pipe is seldom used in pipeline applications because of the higher cost and limited availability.

Steel pipe should be welded, except for joints which need to be taken apart for service, which will be flanged. Mild steel pipes and casing (externally flush) were commonly used since 1940s. In mines, using DC current for haulage, the steel pipes are corroded by ground current.

During 1970s, the author first replaced steel pipes by high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes that had many advantages as listed below: A crew of four can easily lay more than 1000 ft in a shift of 8 h compared with about 300 ft for heavy steel pipes. Pipes larger than 8 inches (200 mm) in diameter are usually not needed.
